ISE Trainers are selected for their professional standards and wealth of experience. Typically an ISE CELTA course will have one main tutor, one supporting tutor for the duration of the programme. What sets ISE apart from other institutions is a pool of specialist visitng tutors, invited to give input on particular pedagogical issues.

Meet some ISE trainers...

Christine-Reba Edge: Academic Director: CELTA & CELTYL Assessor

Christine has been Academic Director of ISE for over 10 years. Previously she ran teacher training and ESOL courses as Head of Department at Westminster College, London. Christine is an UCLES Assessor for CELTA and CELTYL programmes, she regularly assesses teacher training courses both in the UK and overseas. Most recently she completed the inaugural CELTYL programme in Wuhan, China at New Oriental School.

Ray Parker: Head of Teacher Training: CELTA Trainer

Ray has been involved in English Language Teaching since graduating in Hispanic Studies in the late 60’s. The bulk of his time is now devoted to teacher education.  He has taught, trained and examined teachers in more than 30 countries (including in-service teacher education in China) and co-authored a well-known teachers’ textbook on the phonology and pronunciation of English. In his career he has been Director of Studies, College Principal, Senior Lecturer and Director of Language Examinations. His focus now lies with teacher training and ELT project management with a particular interest in in-service professional development for non-native English speaking teachers.

Lucy Norris: CELTA & CELTYL Trainer

Lucy is an accomplished trainer who specializes in training teachers for Young Learners. After 4 years working as a Young Learner trainer at International House in Barcelona, Lucy is now UK based, training at ISE as well as other institutions around Sussex. Lucy also has a particular interest in production of materials and adapting the classroom environment to maximize learner acquisition.


Sandie Hampton: CELTA Trainer

Sandie is a professional trainer with a wide range of experience delivering EFL and ESOL provision and conducting spoken examinations. Since 1989 she has worked as a CELTA trainer in England at ISE (in Hove and Brighton) and Sussex University. She has also worked extensively abroad as a trainer at Cultura Inglese in Brazil.


Robin Wileman: CELTA Trainer

Robin graduated from Cambridge University and has been a teacher trainer for over 15 years. He has been both a CELTA and DELTA Trainer at Cambridge University and has also run training courses in many countries overseas such as Argentina, Poland, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Canada. He is one of the authors of the 'Language to Go' course books for adult learners, and has also contributed to a series of course books written specially for Chinese secondary schools.


Tom Ottway: CELTA Trainer

Maureen Ranieri: CELTA & CELTYL Assessor

Maureen is multi-lingual and has worked in education for almost 40 years. She is a Cambridge ESOL CELTA, CELTYL and YL extension assessor. Italy is where she has worked for a long period of her teacher/teacher-training career, where she has been involved in CELTA, DELTA and CELTYL Teacher Training. However she has also set up CELTYL courses in Hong Kong, Geneva, Bahrain and Rabat in Morocco. She has also been the main tutor for CELTA courses in Geneva. Maureen is very interested in resources for EL and the implications of NLP in the classroom. She is an experienced and valued member of the team 

All trainers must meet strict criteria in order to be accepted as University of Cambridge ESOL Trainers. Assessor status is only conferred to trainers with sufficient experience and academic background to assess and moderate University of Cambridge ESOL Courses all over the world.
